Soli Deo Gloria
An Overview of “The Glory of God Alone”
Soli Deo Gloria is the Latin motto that really encompasses all the other Solas. The phrase translated to English means “To God Alone Glory.” Everything redounds to the glory of God, and that is especially true in salvation. The doctrine of Soli Deo Gloria holds that God gets ALL the glory in salvation. Salvation is of the Lord, and therefore, he gets all glory in it. If we are saved through faith alone, and that faith is a gift from God, then God gets glory because he is the source of faith. If we are saved by grace alone, and he is the giver of grace, then he gets the glory because we cannot produce grace. If we are saved through faith in Christ alone, then God gets all the glory because it was Christ who did the work, not us. If we are saved by the gospel revealed in Scripture alone, then God gets all the glory because Scripture is God’s very word.
Every sola gives glory to God alone. Man cannot revel in the glory of salvation because salvation is not of man; it is of God. Paul breaks out in praise of God at the end of a theological discourse in Romans 11:33-36: “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid? For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.”
This blog will be shorter in length than our other entries. Soli Deo Gloria is really the basis for human existence. As the Westminster Catechism expresses in Question and Answer One: Man’s chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever. Everything exists for the glory of God. Soli Deo Gloria is the underlying doctrine of all Christian theology. If the church loses track of Soli Deo Gloria, the church will lose everything.
The church must maintain a healthy theology of the glory of God in salvation, even today. We must remember that salvation is of the Lord and for his glory. We are saved by his grace and for his glory, so let us remember the Five Solas and live in a way that brings glory and honor to our Sovereign King!
