Coffee Review: Domestique Single-Origin Guatemala

Here’s a fun update: I’m starting a new journey in trying coffee! Unfortunately, I do not live in a well-known coffee area anymore (I miss Kansas City). Where I live, it’s hard to find good, well-roasted coffee. So, over the next few months, or maybe years, I am going to be trying the top coffee roaster from each state. I’ll be using this article for my reference. I would love to be able to actually visit each of these shops and try their coffee as they make and present it. Sadly, this will mostly be ordered through the mail.

First up: the great state of Alabama. Domestique Coffee Roasters was chosen as the top coffee roaster in Alabama in 2022. They are located in Birmingham and are committed to sustainably-grown coffee, which is important to me. Domestique offers several different single-origin coffees, but I chose their Guatemala and Ethiopia coffees. I typically gravitate toward Guatemalan coffee, as I prefer the nutty, chocolatey flavors that come out. With that being said, below is my (very amateurish) review of Domestique’s Single-Origin Guatemala.

Roaster: Domestique Coffee Roasters

Roaster Location: Birmingham, Alabama

Roast Level: Medium

Varietal: Caturra and Red Caturai

Process: Washed

Region: Two Birds Coffee, Finca Esperanza La Morenita

Elevation: 1400 m asl (4593 ft)

My Brew Method: French Press (here’s the one I use). Make sure to use a high-quality grinder (here’s the one I use).

Body: Light to medium bodied

Aroma: This coffee produced a nice, mellow aroma

Flavor notes: Peanut butter, nuts, especially walnut, and that typical chocolatey flavor you’d find in most high-quality Central American coffee

My review: I love this coffee! Domestique has done a great job of roasting a coffee that comes forward with your favorite Central American flavors as stated above. The coffee is a good everyday drinker; it’ll wake you up while providing nice, artistic notes. This isn’t the strongest coffee, which is great for me, because I prefer light- to medium-bodied coffee. I’ll definitely be trying more and more Domestique coffee.

Overall: 8.5/10
